Smith Family History
Descendants of "John" Smith
Second Generation
4. Edmund SMITH ("John" Smith) was born in Georgia circa 1812 and died on August 20, 1888. He married Cecilia Kelly on November 30, 1848. Cecilia was born circa 1823 and died on May 18, 1896. They had the following children (taken from information found in United States census records):
9. Frances SMITH was born circa 1850 in Alabama.
10. Samuel A. SMITH was born circa 1852 in Alabama.
11. Edmund SMITH Jr. was born circa 1855 in Alabama.
12. Martha SMITH was born circa 1858 in Alabama.
13. Sela Ann SMITH was born circa 1861 in Alabama.
14. Willie Smith was born circa 1867 in Alabama.
5. Hiram SMITH ("John" Smith) was born on June 10, 1814 in Georgia and died on June 29, 1889 in Mexia, Alabama. Hiram married Matilda Bohannon, daughter of Armstead and Nancy Bohannonon, on September 5, 1850. Matilda was born June 9, 1829 and died on June 23, 1910. They are buried in the Smith-Bohannon cemetery in Mexia, Alabama along with some of their children and grandchildren and Matilda Bohannon’s parents. They had the following children:
15. Mary Ellen SMITH was born in 1852 in Alabama.
16. William Armstead SMITH was born in 1853 in Alabama.
17. Benjamin Franklin SMITH was born on January 27, 1855 and died on May 23, 1911.
18. Nancy SMITH was born in 1857 in Alabama.
19. Marcus (Mack) SMITH was born in 1864 in Alabama.
20. Edward SMITH was born on May 24, 1866 and died on September 10, 1935.
21. Martha SMITH was born in 1868.
22. Charles SMITH was born in 1869.
Information from various U.S. census records supports the idea that Marcus and Nancy never married or ever had any children. Benjamin Franklin, Edward, and Martha are known to have married and had children and it is believed that William Armstead was a doctor. Nothing further has been found concerning Mary Ellen or Charles.
6. Henry SMITH ("John" Smith) was born in Alabama circa 1816 after the family moved from Georgia. He married Ann Bohannon on January 22, 1852. Ann was a sister to Matilda Bohannon. They had the following children:
23. Amanda SMITH was born circa 1853 in Alabama.
24. Thomas SMITH was born circa 1855 in Alabama.
25. Nancy SMITH was born circa 1858.
26. Dora (Madra?) SMITH was born circa 1860 in Alabama.
27. Emma SMITH was born circa 1862 in Alabama.
The 1860 U.S. census lists a Nancy Smith, age 4, while the 1870 U.S. census lists a Madra Smith, age 10, and an Emma Smith, age 8. There is also a Dora Smith (listed as sister of Mandy and Tom Smith) buried in the Smith-Bohannon Cememtery, as well as, a Mandy Smith, Tom Smith, and Ann Smith, however, there are no dates listed for any of them. Henry Smith is listed as a head of household in the 1860 U.S. census, but he is not listed with Ann and the children in the 1870 U.S. census. Due to this, it is probable that he died sometime between 1860 and 1870.
